  • tag ~ you're it!

I was tagged by my friend Siao on his xanga, so by his decree:

Each player of this game starts off with ten weird things or habits or
    little known facts about yourself.
People who get tagged must write in
a blog of their own ten weird things or habits or little known facts as
well as state this rule clearly.
At the end you must choose six people
to be tagged and list their names. No tagbacks!

    1. i pick at my ring fingernail on my left hand when i'm bored, stressed, or nervous
    2. i can't stand the taste, texture, or smell of olives
    3. i used to have six lobe, one rook, one snug, one conch, one belly, and one tongue piercing
    4. the stars on my pelvic area are copied from the surf shorts pattern of a guy i used to crush on and somewhat date
    5. i don't shave my armpits - i epilate 'em
    6. i usually don't brush my teeth at night
    7. but i've never had a cavity!
    8. i don't drink soda or any other carbonated drinks - bubbles hurt my throat
    9. one of my goals in life is to enter an eating contest
    10. i stole a tiny donald duck figure from pre-school and felt guilty about it for years

I tag... Adriel, Simone, Danny, Mish, Pam, and Adley!
    *edit*
just for that... I also tag Trevor-Clarky!!! muahahaha

  • happy year of the pig~

    in India!

adriel and i arrived in Delhi today from Mumbai.

life has been great. we've done so much in just a few days that i don't really have the energy to write about it right now. it's been relaxing (surprisingly, since India is a land of constant chaos) and we're just going to enjoy the next week as best as we can before we return to shanghai to face the harsh realities of life once again.

many thanks to the most warm-hearted family in Mumbai and to adriel's parents' hospitality.

if anyone has any suggestions of things to do or see or EAT in Delhi, please leave a comment. :o )

  • love will set you free.

i had much to write about last night, but this morning's recent news has sort of muted my thoughts.

adey, simone, olivia, jo, serena, wei, jesse, sam, jake and tina (even though i just met you three) - thank you for last night. i think maybe two of those listed actually will see this, but i just wanted to get out my thanks publicly first. last night was rough, but after hanging out and just being in such a warm environment last night, i completely forgot what happened in the evening. adey and i both felt that the whole incident happened ages ago - that's how great you guys really are. thank you again for a great night - you all are truly great people and even better friends. :o )

to the families and friends of our kamehameha sisters, i hope you are all doing well and hanging in there okay. i had a short talk last night about how it seems like many great people are taken from us or suffer. sometimes i go through short periods of wondering why i can't suffer for those who don't deserve the pain. if there was a way to do so, i honestly would. i used to have a lot of pent up emotion about how the world works and how there are so many in the world going through loss, grief, pain, and all other sufferings who don't deserve it. now i think i'm slowly coming to terms with everything. i now accept that we really cannot change how unpredictable our lives are. i hate "giving in" to that reality since, for those who know me, i always need a solid answer and i'll go through great lengths to find it. the soul searching i've been doing over the past years hasn't turned up any tangible answers, but it has taught me that i need to come to terms with life. i cannot control every aspect of life. honestly, i feel slightly defeated, but i also feel like a weight has been lifted off my body and heart. my mind and spirit feels strengthened somehow, and i think that good things await for the future. maybe the obstacles and pitfalls along our journeys really are there to help us learn and grow stronger. i know this all sounds so cliche, like something you would read in an inspirational quote book or email, but i hope it's not being received that way, especially since it's coming from the queen of cynicism.

this is my resignation from that throne, though i feel more like someone carried me off it on a fake down quilt (cruelty to animals, BAD!!!)
last night i held my tongue and did not fight back. yes, the language barrier probably had some role in that, but its the first time in a looong time that i've resigned myself in a situation like that. sometimes you (well, i) need to just accept the way things are. everyone knows i care too much about everything. i used to feel the solution to that problem was to care less about things, but i think salvation can be found through acceptance of reality while maintaining the same care and heart i hold about everything.

i'll blog later about last night's crazy lady & police incident. for now i need to tackle the pile of dirty dishes with my mighty sponge. ciao~

Deep Peace - A Gaelic Blessing

Deep peace of the running wave to you
Deep peace of the flowing air to you
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you
Deep peace of the shining stars to you
Deep peace of the gentle night to you
Moon and stars pour their healing light on you
Deep peace of Christ, of Christ
The light of the world to you
Deep peace of Christ to you

  • it's almost february! (sorry, wrote this on january 30th, heh)

due to being hen mang those past several days, i haven't had time to post this. and it's already february 4th. eh??
    ---
does anyone (besides naomi) feel like life is flying by faster every day? i can't believe it's already the end of january. sometimes it seems like i wake up dreading work on monday morning, then all of a sudden it's the weekend. is there any way to slow the time?

    easy solution #1: photo blog.
actually, i lied. it's not a solution... it makes me realize how fast life is passing even more. ah well.. i might as well jot things down in the meantime.

and while i wait for my photos to load on Flickr, here are some things i remember from january:
    - Heroes and Battlestar Galactica marathons
    - being extra sleepy in the cold mornings and dragging into work an hour late
    - staying late at work around college application deadline times
    - one of my students changing her name to "Cathryn"
    - another student thanking me for help on the TOEFL
    - eating at Haya's Mediterranean and ordering in from them a gazillion times
    - accidentally rolling over Morse in the mornings
    - having the entire bowling alley to ourselves
    - Moon River Diner being out of popcorn (gasp!)
    - email convos w/C
    - laughing out loud in the office from email and messages w/my coworkers
    - watching Jo hop onto the back of my bike while AD rode it
    - huo guo all month long
    - getting hooked on logic games <--lame
    - trying to score above B on Big Brain Academy and failing. compute sucks. *EDIT* since this blog, i've achieved an A-!!! wheee practice makes perfect.

    ---

a typical lazy day in our apartment  - the end of our christmas eve dinner at City Diner (gingerbread, christmas pudding, and free wine. hell yes.)
    ---

love all around on christmas day  -  Bishi-Bashi. Best Game Ever.
    ---

this is going to be my 2007 christmas photo  -  yummy dinner at that vietnamese restaurant in causeway bay
    ---

step 1) put the fries in the bag  -  step 2) then you seaweed the bag (sung to the tune of "dick in a box")
p.s. shake shake fries is the best idea Hong Kong has ever created. kenny agrees.
    ---

brotherly shoe love  -  che zai meen <--yeah, i totally don't know if that's right, but we love this noodle place. see my old Hong Kong blog for deets
    ---

i swear, all we do in Hong Kong is eat. at McDonalds.  -  going up the longest escalator with kenny, michelle, and random man #1 in the background
    ---

western dinner somewhere in Soho, right next to the escalator  -  the tortilla chips in our nachos were actually Cool Ranch Doritos, hehehe
    ---

michelle is hard at work killing zombies  -  i died.
    ---

mmmmm island beverly froyo!!! with random man #2 in photo  -  one last goodbye <3 photo with kenny
kenny and wifey, i really really REALLY had a blast seeing you guys in HK. you really helped my LA-sickness :o )
i even cried on the plane because i was sad to leave the only two old-skool pals i'd seen in 6 months. true story.
everyone else in LA... come to the far east more often!  miss you all.
    ---

adey's super excited to shake his last shake-shake fries before returning to shanghai.  -  oooh... mcds is yum.
    ---

starting off 2007 with a pretzel dog and popcorn. so much for being healthy this year  -  at least we're cooking at home more. see, vegetarian food can be yum!

    ---

a niang's noodles... reeeally good noodles, but not so great that day when a guy killed a baby rat right in plain sight of everyone. eeeugh. i instinctively swore at him in chinese, hahaha  -  a tough decision
    ---

House of Canton  - in Mei Long Zhen on Nanjing Xi Lu
    ---
the atmosphere was a bit different from a typical dim sum place (a few tables, really dark, not many ppl there though it was 3pm when we got there, heh) and the food was slightly different as well. it seemed more fusion-dim sum than typical. we ate A LOT and it came out to just about 100 rmb... fairly priced too. i recommend these little custard piggies - even better than bacon
    ---

"adey's got a gun" hehe @ B&Q  -  our fave huoguo place that's right around the corner
    ---
i woke up this morning thinking i had a sore throat from inhaling gas fumes during yesterday's go-karting, but now it seems i have a mild case of whiplash. woohoooo~

  • photoblog #21 of 2006

why, yes, i do keep track of the number of photoblogs i've put up in 2006.

i've been busy, overworked, underpaid, tired, caring for felines and a human, cooking, washing, eating takeaway, and of course, snapping photos.

so here's 50 pics for your enjoyment from halloween to the end of my berlin trip. :o ) enjoy!

don't forget to say hi 'coz i miss y'all dearly.

    and begin!
    ---

Boots has made herself right at home... in my shipping box and on adey's white shirts
    ---

our silly cat  ---  the chinese hard at work in qibao town
    ---

i love this ad  ---  we spent an afternoon in qibao eating snacks and watching everyone please the tourists
    ---

more tourist trapping  ---  down by the river
    ---

some sticky rice cake that everyone was buying  ---  look at how exciting qibao is!
hehe actually, the old town was pretty lively
    ---

i wish shanghai looked more like this  ---  a parting pic
that night we bought a mattress pad from some americans... and now the rockhard chinese mattress is le comfy
c, i now understand why you like hard mattresses
    ---

NYSP - New York Style Pizza
    Nanjing Xi Lu No. 1699
(Subway exit #5 at JingAn Temple stop)
our first experience at NYSP was unbelievable. we wept over our precious manhattan memories while enjoying the "new york style pizza".
if you love the NY thin crust and cheesy goodness, do make a trip out to the JingAn temple subway stop. every 16" pizza is only 88 RMB, and you can choose to do halfsies if you want.
we tried the Pesto, the Hell('s) Kitchen, the Manhattan, Tomato Basil, and the Brooklyn.
my favorite: Tomato Basil              adey's favorite: Hell's Kitchen
eating in tends to be better than ordering delivery. we ordered in once and the pizza just didn't seem right. i guess like most other foods, its best straight outta the oven. well, minus leftovers. those are good too.
if you want to order their crispy garlic knots, make sure you go early. they seem to run out of garlic knots by 7pm or so
    verdict: A
    ---

like i said, Boots just made herself at home  ---  eating shenjian bao after my new chut haircut that cost 30 rmb. i tipped the guy 10 rmb 'coz i liked it so much.
that equals $5.10 usd. sweet deal.
    ---

adey and Boots worked so hard on carving our mini-pumpkin that fell fast asleep after its completion
    ---

tada! our first hallo-pumpkin was a portrait of Boots!  ---  oooooh
    ---

Boots getting jealous of the new cat  ---  devouring pudong airport noodles before my flight to Berlin
    ---

our uber-emo haircuts  ---  sophie and me at the olympic stadium after the workshop
i met up with PRC Study at the workshop 'coz they were there too... got to see vivian and met sophie there.
made me really want to move to beijing. i freaking love vivian's humor.
plug for PRC Study - if you're thinking about studying mandarin chinese in Beijing, sign up with PRC Study!
i did a super-beginner class for a month in summer 2005 and learned a ton!
enough to trick my university's chinese department that i knew enough to get into chinese 2 hehe kidding...
anyway, i highly recommend their programs, and if you want more info, go to www.prcstudy.com or message me :o )
    ---

the berlin olympic stadium is soooo ugly... but i guess it fits the nazi-era well. solid pieces of stone, barely any design, etc.
at least the seats were uber-comfy. yes, i'm using "uber" without the umlaut (sp?) 'coz of the whole berlin theme...
anyway... all the italians there were drunkenly singing their song 'coz of the world cup this year.
sophie's from france. she was not enthused.
look, it's a bunch of weirdos by the Brandenburg Gate
    ---

thanks to all y'all who left me advice about what to do in berlin!
i went on the free walking tour from New Berlin Tours (www.newberlintours.com)
and it was great! i saw and learned so much about berlin's history in just a few hours.
plus i met a few interesting people who i hope contact me sometime soon... love meeting folk while traveling.
    ---

the holocaust memorial ... quite ze powerful in so many different aspects  ---  the building behind the lot where hitler's bunker once lay. gotta love that balcony!
    ---

the Französischer Dom (French Cathedral), just one side of the Gendarmenmarkt square  ---  pretty self-explanatory
from this, i learned the germans were jealous and had a strange government. i hope i don't go to jail for this...
    ---

Humboldt Uni, where my supervisor studied for a year and where the burning of the books memorial is. whooo... ---  this is where the first potato was grown in berlin. neet ey?
    ---

do tv towers look the same in every city?   ---  a currywurst!
yes, i ate a currywurst!  a vegan currywurst with uber-deelish fries
if you wanna try some vegan german fare or fast food, try:
    Yellow Sunshine
    Wiener Strasse 19

    Berlin 10999

    030-69598720
    verdict: A+
reason: coz vegetarian little me got to eat a wurst in germany!!!
    ---

after the workshop, i stayed at this boutique-type hotel:
    Hotel Zoo
    Kurfürstendamm 25 10719 Berlin
    www.hotelzoo.de
overall, it wasn't bad. the room i had was on the second floor and faced the street, v.convenient.
it was really boutiquey, so if you like old school phones and tvs and furniture and showers, you'll love this place. i did. :o )
that's the lobby above on the left... and a bunch of chain-smoking italians

    ---

one more good thing about Hotel Zoo is that they have an extensive breakfast buffet included with the nightly costs. a lotta hotels don't offer this... so me being the food whore i am, i loved it. tons of different breads and spreads, a variety of cereals, granolas, fruit, and cheese combined with juice and fresh coffee. mmm....
and a view of my window. glad i had the tree blocking part of the view so nobody could see me dancing to german mtv in my thermal underwear.
    ---

on my second free day, i toured a farmer's market right near KaDeWe after some major wallet damage.
i saw some locals lined up at a booth that smelled delicious, so i leaned over to take a peek.
the guy in front of me, an older local berliner, explained to me that it was a "kartoffelpuffer",
basically a big potato pancake v.similar to hashbrowns that can be topped with applesauce.
    ---

and ooooh, was it delicious! straight off the griddle. the guy and i chatted for a bit, and he told me he stops there every morning before work to have a kartoffelpuffer for breakfast.
he also told me it's his favorite "berliner fare." don't know if it's true, but he said berliners really enjoy that farmer's market because when the berlin wall was still up, people in west berlin couldn't get the fresh produce that east berlin had. so since the wall came down, west berliners have reveled in the farmer's market. well, something to that extent.
    ... and
don't know if you can see the pic well, but i thought it was hilarious to see HSBC in the same building as H&M
    ---

more shots of my hotel for anyone who's searching online for more info on Hotel Zoo...
    ---

on the left: Maja's Deli. a veg restaurant that ppl raved about online, but it wasn't that great... i had a not-so-tasty casserole with some mediocre rice that cost 5 euro. meh.
    verdict: C-
being the polite endless stomach that i am, i finished the heaping serving and headed off to my second dinner of the night at:
    on the right:
    Imbiss W
    Kastanienallee 49
I had a mango lassi and a rocket-sundriedtomatoes-mozzarella naan pizza there for cheap. And it was deelish.
much better than Maja's Deli, but if you're not a naan pizza person, then visit Imbiss W anyway because it'll convert you.
funky decor, crazy music... loved it. i felt a bit odd there 'coz everyone seemed german punk-emo, but whatever. i hid behind my semi-emo glasses.
    verdict: B+

    ---

the huge pizza  ---  the ridiculous mercedes-benz taxis
apologies for the meh-stunning ending shots. i'll put up another photo blog soon to make up for it and so you can catch up on what i've been up to since the berlin trip.
now say hello 'coz i'm ronery in shanghai and miss you all!

November 23, 2006

  • why did you want to go to college?

hi all, i need more "favors" which really aren't favors, 'coz i'm
actually really interested in what stories and opinions you have to
    share wtih me

if/when you aren't comatose from thanksgiving dinner, could you leave
me a comment about what was the most important factor to you when
selecting which colleges and universities you wanted to attend.

if you're an international student or attended a high school in a
non-US country, i would really like to know what kind of secondary
school you attended (public/private/international) and what the most
important factor was for students when selecting colleges. reputation?
ranking? location? programs? safety? cost? and so on... and why did you
choose to go to the school you're at now or your alma mater? any other
stories you'd like to share would be gladly appreciated too.

of course, i'd love to hear it from all you US folk too :) then i can
tell my clients about what students in the US think about choosing
    colleges.

and most importantly, i'll get to learn more about you even though we
are an ocean (and in some cases, countries) apart :o ) and you'll help
me feel less lonely out here in shanghai. thanks a bunch!

  • thankful

i'm thankful for many many things this thanksgiving,
but since i don't have the time to write about everything while i'm at work,
i'll just choose the one thing i'm thankful for most at this moment.

    my adeylish

i just received a vase filled with white lilies from AD who's all the way in guangzhou! :o ) thank you, swede. these really made my day a lot less stressful
can't wait till you come home tomorrow! :o )
