i don't even know who reads this anymore, but i need to clear my head before i jump into work again.

i feel so recharged after this weekend... Xiao Wang worked on me Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings, using some traditional Chinese medicinal oils that supposedly are really hard to get at those strengths... quote - "not even movie stars can buy these oils" haha. his diagnosis after the initial tuina massage was that my fuke is all "fuked up" hehe... okay, not punny. also he told AD that he hasn't experience this much toxins in anyone before - greaaat. i don't really know anything about trad. Chinese medicine, so i just went along with it. after all, how bad can massages be, right?

after the first massage, i felt like i got beaten up! it was extremely painful, and Xiao Wang could tell exactly where it hurt too. i tried to ask how he could tell i had so many 'toxins' or 'poisons' in me, and he told AD something like he can feel it in his hands, its like water under his fingers? beats me... but i have felt better after every massage. he's been working on me everyday, and i can say that this morning i woke up feeling loads better. i think (hope, more like) i'm finally out of that depressing funk i've been in for the last several weeks... but we'll see, i guess.

it probably helps that this weekend went smoothly... lots of eating and shopping with AD. and laundry. and breaking glasses, haha. just to recap so i don't forget it...

Sat: woke up way too early and spent the morning reading, electrician and Xiao Chen (?) come and pwn us - but try to fix the short circuit in the bathroom, dim sum all-you-can-eat brunch at Lynn's, short stroll in the sunny weather to the subway, over to Pudong to do some damage at Super Brand Mall, being a shopping assistant for consumerist AD, laughing about the lady who tried to take our cab and then had to get out and we got the cab (hehe), over to ID Hair for an amazing haircut from Leo (pleeease stay at ID Hair after i return to Shanghai!), bus over to Times Square for some Chaterhouse magazining (ouch), then home for foot soaking, herbal oil massage from Xiao Wang, some laziness on our couch, then over to Macao Dollar for our fave 火锅... great way to end the day.

Sun: another early rising, did some internet searching on tuina massage and fuke, short chat w/reid, hilarity ensued, long phone chat w/my parents, yet another all-you-can-eat healthier brunch at Sasha's, strolled over to Billy Wang's, waited forever to get our feet measured (poor guy, the place was so busy and only one staff...), trying to find a bathroom but failing (well, for me haha), a short rest for double espresso - AD and chai latte for me at Jamaica Blue, then home to play guitar and sing while AD went hunting for his Salvatore Ferragamo receipt, mopeded over to the store to try and get his shoes fixed, then home and some Xiao Wang action. not as crazy sore today, but still - yeow!, munching in the kitchen, then some bedtime talk and rolling sleepy eyes, haha...

and now it's Monday. a quick non-sweaty bike ride to work, then i find out i have to give a presentation tonight at Fudan, which is super far away... AD offered to bring my bike back home from work for me... thanks :o ) and now to finish editing this PS and working on some Yale applications... eep! here begins the long busy week... i really hope i can find some time to study, well, other than my hour long lunch break. ciao~

saturday turned out to be one of the most relaxing, self-indulgent, and enjoyable days i've had in an extremely long time. we started off the day with lunch at Haiku by Hatsune with leslie and diana. i'm so pumped that diana's gonna be in shanghai for the next year!! and leslie will be here too - yeah fellowships :) it's hard to deal when your friends come and go so quickly.

the food there was okay; i think i was expecting more, like Santa Monica / Los Angeles type sushi places - but at least it wasn't bad. after lunch, diana went shopping w/her mom and leslie, adey and i went to Evergreen to get massages. turned out they had a 'deal' - RMB 150 for foot and body massage. i'll admit that i was hesitant at first to get the back massage, but i'm so glad i did it. i asked for a guy masseuse and he was putting his entire body weight onto my back. kept saying stuff like, qi guai! and bu hao!, haha. trying to get us to come back more often. but i'll consider it... though the atmosphere there wasn't quite like Taipan, i felt the masseuses did a much better job than the ones at Taipan. i'm looking forward to trying out other spas and massage places with leslie :)

adey and i dropped leslie off at SOGO then returned home for a little alone time. no, not like, 'us' alone time, but more like, adey fell asleep and i got to watch most of Amazing Grace, haha. the movie's mediocre... had to fight sleep to stay up because i was soooo relaxed from that massage. i think i'll start splurging more on pampering myself :)

eventually i dragged adey out of bed so we could have dinner, and it turned out that the place we went to was closed! so we walked a few blocks in the light drizzle to Bakerzin in Raffles City. the first time we went there, i wasn't that impressed... but this time, WOW. they've added to their menu and did a much better job than last february. AD had oxtail fried rice and i had a prawn sandwich. we shared "tapas" of pistachio creme brulee (i think claudia would <3 this), caramel chocolate (hazelnut?) ice cream with crispies, and a lychee ginger gingko nut jelly dessert. even better was that we got their signature warm chocolate cake topped w/vanilla ice cream for FREE :D and it was all JUST enough food - not too much, not too little, but juuust right.

after dinner, we did a rushed shopping job at UNIQLO and i ended up buying a pair of jeans. first pair of jeans i've bought in a looong ass time because i'm lazy and dress like a bum because it's tough finding jeans to fit my hips/ass/legs. v. happy.

one of the best parts of saturday was the next morning when i woke up to see that i'd dropped a lb from the previous morning - even after all that eating and gorging on desserts. love my life.

sunday was nice too, but it wasn't as amazing as saturday :P we made the arduous trek (not really) out to Pudong's Zendai Plaza to brunch at Cafe Du Monde. jambalaya, BBQ prawns with some kind of delicious topping, pecan waffle, bacon, toast, bread, breadsticks, mocha, french drip coffee, and of course, BEIGNETS. mmmm. pictures will soon follow once i upload them all.

we cruised in La Maison until adey had to unleash the beast, then ended up at Super Brand Mall for more shopping galore. we did our damage at H&M, then headed back to SOGO for vacuum cleaner bags that we bought for our ayi - who will no longer be our ayi because she's leaving this week!! :( sob!! this past week was niiiice... i'm going to be a little heartbroken when i come home to a cat hair filled apartment.

so that was the weekend recap. i have 15 mins before my lunch break is over and am contemplating a mcdonalds $0.50 coffee. hmm...

am looking forward to this coming weekend! :o )

funny how in just a few days, this song totally changed its meaning in my life... blech.

    sara b- morningside

i'm not scared of you now or so i say
there's no reason to run, although i may
i'm not as sure as i seem, this much i know
what does it mean when you leave and i follow

i could try to forget what you do when i let you get
through to me but then you do it over again
i could rage like a fire and you'd bring rain i desire
til you get to me on my morningside

keep my distance i tried, no use
but no matter the miles, i'm back to you

let me down you say never, baby blues, don't you ever
i'm used to being one with the misfortune to find
afternoons run for cover and full moons just wonder
what it looks like here on my morningside

look back, don't you dare let me start to do that
i don't care if the things that i have
only make me afraid to lose
    i need to let go
need to want to keep letting you know
that we have both have a reason to follow
long as we let this lead i'm barely breathing

    ------
bleeeech. i can't believe i'm even blogging again... i told myself i wouldn't do this, but i feel like i have no one to talk to anymore. funny how when i feel this way, old friends who i haven't spoken to in forever get back in touch w/me with an open ear and virtual open arms, haha. thanks guys, you know who you are... if you're even reading this.

you know, i haven't felt this crappy in such a long time... i also haven't had anyone play these many mind games with me EVER. suckyyyy. sucky a lot, actually. i've also had those thoughts that i don't like to have, and i haven't had those in a really long time. what's happening to me? why is it so easy for someone to knock down that foundation that i just built? guess it wasn't strong enough... i'll need to use better engineering next time.

in other news, i haven't been feeling well at all this weekend. surprise surprise, right? blech.

  • end of a two month blogging drought

actually i'm unsure if this counts as a blog, as i don't really have anything to say. okay, i lied, i do.

first, i had a blast this weekend! happy b-day simoneyyy :D i'm glad you had a grreat weekend!
second, i reeeally need to sit down and start studying
    third, everyone's leaving Shanghai!! *weep*
fourth, in the words of my old roomie, "i love my life!" and am feeling content
last, i leave you with the song i can't get out of my head for various reasons:

    Sara Bareilles - Love Song

    head under water
and they tell me to breathe easy for a while
the breathing gets harder, even i know that
you made room for me but it's too soon to see
if i'm happy in your hands
i'm unusually hard to hold on to

    blank stares at blank pages
no easy way to say this
you mean well, but you make this hard on me

i'm not gonna write you a love song
    'cause you asked for it
'cause you need one, you see
i'm not gonna write you a love song
    'cause you tell me it's
    make or breaking this
    if you're on your way
i'm not gonna write you to stay
if all you have is leaving i'm gonna need a better reason
to write you a love song today

    i learned the hard way
that they all say things you want to hear
and my heavy heart sinks deep down under you and
your twisted words, your help just hurts
you are not what i thought you were
    hello to high and dry

    convinced me to please you
made me think that i need this too
i'm trying to let you hear me as i am

i'm not gonna write you a love song
    'cause you asked for it
'cause you need one, you see
i'm not gonna write you a love song
    'cause you tell me it's
    make or breaking this
    if you're on your way
i'm not gonna write you to stay
if all you have is leaving i'm gonna need a better reason
to write you a love song today

promise me that you'll leave the light on
to help me see with daylight, my guide, gone
'cause i believe there's a way you can love me
    because i say

    i won't write you a love song
    'cause you asked for it
'cause you need one, you see
i'm not gonna write you a love song
'cause you tell me it's make or breaking this

is that why you wanted a love song
    'cause you asked for it
'cause you need one, you see
i'm not gonna write you a love song
'cause you tell me it's make or breaking this
    if you're on your way

i'm not gonna write you to stay
if your heart is nowhere in it
    i don't want it for a minute
babe, i'll walk the seven seas when i believe that
there's a reason to write you a love song today
    ----
apologies for the lack of blogging substance... i'm exhausted from the weekend and will head home soon to recharge for the rest of the week :) ciao for now!

  • i miss freedom

first i just want to say, C, you are one of the, if not the most amazing person i've ever met. don't let anyone else's words, no matter how important they are to you, bring you down. you're strong, i know because you've been a rock of strength for me in the past. *HUG* <3 you, chica.

second, i've had this huge weight on my blogging chest -- i can't stand the way China blocks its sites!!! i have xanga premium, and i can't even use it unless i go through all these proxy sites... what a drag. additionally i just found out that flickr photos have been blocked too *nooooo* because of some spill in dalian that was posted all over flickr. what's the point of blocking the pictures of the spill in China? the rest of the world can still see the pictures and can still read political rant blogs about China, and sorry to tell you this, government, but the rest of the world's internet readers outweigh the internet users in China. haha that's as close as i'm going to get to blogging politically against the Chinese govt. i still don't want to tread on their toes. i love communism! (even though the CCP is so not communist anymore... another story for another time)

PHEW! there we go. i feel much better.

oh wait, one more rant -
i don't know when it started, but i think i'm losing my mind. literally losing it. the old cat who had a memory that could beat down an elephant's has vanished. now all that remains is the cat who doesn't even remember people's names right after they tell her their names. the cat that can't remember what's on her to-do list. this may not sound devastating to those of you who are somewhat or very memory-impaired, but it's crushing to know that my memory is no longer at its peak! i need to start doing whatever it was that helped keep my memory sharp. and no, eating fish has not helped - in fact, i think my memory started to disappear when i introduced seafood back into my diet. but i can't complain, as my weight finally dropped too, heehee. go protein! i'm saying this after i ate the last of the cookies in the house, eehehhehe.

aaaand i'm off to bed early. been battling a mean cough and aching sinuses for almost a week now - good fun, i tell you. if anyone will be in Hong Kong this weekend and wants to meet up, please get in touch! i'll be there 'til Sunday yeaaaah back to Honkyland.

    peace.

  • the slow life is good to me

to all of you who i haven't replied to or contacted since i've been back home, i'm sorry!!! i've fallen victim to the island rhythm. due to our old family computer crawling like a tranquilized snail, i also haven't had much chance to be online. i tried writing a reply to C a few days ago, and i'd have to wait 30 seconds for the words to show up on the computer screen after i typed them now i'm writing from our new family hp computer - yeah yeah i know, but it's a really good computer for the price. additionally, any computer is probably better than the one being retired as i type. right now i'm waiting for some files to download. what better time to post up the pictures from our hawaii trip in may? :o ) here goes~

    Hawaii 2007
    ---

saying farewell from the Pudong airport  --- "aloha!" from the Honolulu airport

adriel's two scoops rice, tree fried dumplings, one serving meat jun, four servings vegetables. --- my five servings vegetables with fish jun. mmm gotta love those korean garlic potatoes... mm... drooling as i type this...

we went down to Kapi`olani Park to join the tourii and view the May Day celebration (5.1). a picture of the tutus and keiki dancing together --- after the show and viewing the winners of the lei making contests (wow some guys really put good effort into that!) we ate at Rainbow Drive Inn for a late lunch. on the right: my "daily special" - grilled ahi plate

ravenous AD with his chili dog plate lunch at Rainbow's --- his pastrami melt sammich at Kaka`ako Kitchen in Ward. too bad we didn't get to eat at Kua `Aina... next year ey?

my macadamia nut crusted grilled ahi (i think was ahi) with butter garlic and brown rice plate lunch. i don't recommend it...pretty bland. i had to eat the fish with the shown salad dressing --- my brother and his `ohana at Hanaki (Japanese buffet dinner)

allen boy and kirk being themselves --- my mumsy and me

at the halfway point up Diamond Head --- c'mon adeylish, crank harder!!!

the view from the top --- the other view from the top: waikiki

we don't need no "certificate", we gots proof we made it to the top --- cooling down at the Waiola Store with some shave ice - NOT sno cones, NOT shaved ice, NOT ice shave, but shave ice ;)

we love our jewelry: my mum and i at the Blaisdell Craft Fair --- adeylish and i at the East Honolulu Food Festival held at Star of the Sea which turned out to be really great! live entertainment and free food from loads of great Hawaii restaurants :o )

ecstatic to eat lovely gourmet seafood --- the unnecessary umbrella, crisp white wine, refreshing milk tea, and holy-dang-that's-ono-haupia malasada

hanging out on our porch while my brother BBQs our feast --- my mummy and me. i wish my skin was really that tanned in real life

we <3 Wailana Coffee House - AD: pancakes with eggs and bacon, Cat: garlic shrimp stirfry w/baked potato and garlic bread --- my personal and frightening chauffeur

reading at ala moana during sundown --- capturing the sunset

the inside of my baby --- the outside of Cat Too :o )
i just want to brag again that my dad put this car together from scratch. took the manual transmission out of a beetle and replaced it in the superbeetle (which had auto-manual transmission or whatever it's called). put all the wood paneling on, painted the car too, replaced the top and wheels... the only thing he didn't do himself was upholster the seats. but he chose the color my dad rules.

eating take away garlic shrimp and prawns with kahuku corn in my car 'coz kahuku was just too blustery that day --- where's adriel?

the left side of waimea --- the right side
    geez i love my home.

happy third trip to Hawai'i with me, adey --- driving back into town from the north shore

haha my shift knob and slippa --- enjoying the lovely day with the top down :o )

driving back into town --- i miss being surrounded by so much flora

since i was going to miss both mother's and father's day, i spent a night putting these picture frams together for my parents :o )

the delicious airport nachos that took nine years to order. i felt like we weren't being waited on 'coz we were the only asians in that restaurant, hehe --- aloha hawai`i... we'll be back again

milking our layover at the Kansai airport with curry beef udon and takoyaki! --- adey had only 9 yen in his wallet, but these caramels cost 10 yen. he sweet-talked the female cashier into loaning him 1 yen to purchase these caramels. i swear, you are a big "innocent" womanizer

and that's a wrap! going to finish transferring all the files from the old computer to this computer now... thanks for joining me on this lovely hawaiian afternoon. we hope to see you next time! a hui hou!
  • my dad is in the hospital and will undergo endovascular embolization tomorrow. i leave tomorrow to spend a week in hawaii. i don't know if this is some random freak incident or if it's something bigger trying to tell me something.

whatever it is... i just hope everything turns out positively. please pray.

  • well, guess what... china's gone and done it again. xanga is officially blocked, rawr.

SO... mahalo to adley for letting me use his VPN connection, though i'm unsure whether he knows adey let me use it.

here are the delhi pics!! enjoy!!

    ---

after a @_@ plane ride from mumbai, we met adriel's parents at the airport and arrived at the Hilton Trident Gurgaon. NICE HOTEL. the entrance gate in the left picture reminded me of Wells' War of the Worlds. ---  me and mrs. chan on the huge lobby sofa
    ---

the reflective pool at the hotel  ---  since we flew to india during the chinese new year, the flight gave us some hong bao with chocolate gold coins. i love the phrase at the top: "make a pile" hehehe
    ---

we had the afternoon free, so we all headed over to the Qutab Minar, the highest stone tower in India. built in 1310 as part of an islamic mosque, the Qutab Minar stands today in its red sandstone and white marble majesty.  ---  a stray dog and me. one that which shocked me about india was the amount of stray dogs everywhere. in china, stray cats rule the streets, but in india it's a dog's land.
    ---

lots of people hanging out at the mosque during sundown  ---  we went at the perfect time; the lighting cast amazing shadows on the mosque and the earthy colors stood out in the sunlight.
    ---

parrots chillin' at the mosque  ---  the chan fam and me in front of the minaret. picture taken by a local indian family who spent the afternoon at the mosque because it was their son's birthday. they offered us some cadbury chocolate and forced us into taking some, even though we politely declined
    ---

adriel and his long lost indian princess. a group of young indians really wanted to take their picture with us. i read somewhere that indians like to take pictures with tourists, they they show the pics to their friends and make up stories like, "yeah i slept with her that night" etc. hahaha... it was a weird experience. the girl approached AD first, then her boyfriend came to me to take a picture, and the girl got all pissy. hehe.  ---  adriel and his other princess us and the lit lanterns at our hotel at night.
    ---

the hotel reflection pools at night. i really appreciated that short taste of luxury during the trip because it made the contrast between the rich and the poor really stand out.  ---  the next day adriel woke up with revef eugned (read that backwards, haha) and had to stay at the hotel and rest, so i headed out with mrs. chan and we went sightseeing during the day. our first stop - the india gate, a memorial for the 90,000 soldiers who died during WWI and the Afghan wars. lots of tourists (both foreign and indian) and therefore, lots of hawkers coming up to you trying to spread henna paste on your hands for a few rupees.
    ---

after a short car tour of the president's house and the parliament, we headed to the Purana Qila, or "old fort." i don't know much about this place other than that is was built by Humayun, the second Mughal emperor, and that it had a mosque in it. whatever it was, i loved the architecture there. i don't know much about architecture, but i love the different colors and shades of marble and sandstone and the arches (do they have a different name when the arch has a point at the top?) look at the tiles!!! love the use of bright colors.
    ---

an old artifact in the Purana Qila museum. it's amazing how these intricate stone carvings and impressive structures were made without advanced technology. i can only imagine how much planning and labor went into these forts and tombs and mosques. i need to visit the pyramids one day.   ---  the lake outside the Old Fort with little foot paddle boats for rental
    ---

after an hour or so of admiring indian handicrafts, fabrics, and marble & precious stone items the Cottage Emporium and a quick bite in the car, we headed back to the hotel. on the way there, we caught sight of some monkeys next to the road. can you spot 'em?  ---  saw this in the local paper: BDA Approved!
    ---

the red light on this stoplight reads, "RELAX"  ---  adey trying to cool his fever with a pail of water
we left adriel's parents that night and headed to navroze's guest house, which we stayed at for the remainder of the trip. their family is so warm-hearted... let us stay in their guest house even though we just met them a few nights before!
    ---

weeee!  --- the next day our guide mukesh took us all over the high heavens. we started off with a trip to Humayun's Tomb, "an elegant example of early Mughal architecture, the tomb of the second Mughal emperor also houses the graves of his wives." since we didn't have a chance to see the Taj Mahal in Agra, mukesh took us to the "Taj of Delhi"
    ---

seee? the taj of delhi! har har  ---  just fyi...
    ---

sooooo amazing. how in the world do you build something like this without machiiines?  ---  us being tourists
then we took a drive past the Lotus Temple, the Baha'i house of worship. pretty cool beans temple.. really looks like a lotus!
    ---

next stop: Raj Ghat, a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi and also where he was cremated. Mohandas was the man! we visited a museum devoted to his life while in Mumbai, and dang, he really is the man. lots of people here paying their respects.
    ---

dude.  ---  the one person bench!
    ---

there's mukesh (bottom right corner) leading us down a busy side street to our lunch destination  ---  i love that indians smile when they see the camera :)
    ---

lunch at Karim's! good food and cheap prices. half plate of mixed veg, veg rolls (bland, but good with the spicy veg curry), lamb, veg pulao, and a bread (dang, i forgot what this bread it called but it was SO good! crisp and buttery... mmm...) i wrote down the total cost somewhere but too lazy to go hunting for it. if you want good indian food at a safe, clean establishment, eat at Karim's. just across the street from the main entrance to the Jama Masjid.
    ---

after lunch we headed to the Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India. lots of people there just relaxing and enjoying the day.
watching the pigeons take flight  ---  soaking up the sun
    ---

    the water  ---  chillaxin
if you plan to visit the Jama Masjid with a camera, hide it well - 100 rupees charge to bring your camera in. good thing i had a huge bag also, you must take your shoes off at the entrance. make sure to carry your shoes with you in your hands, or they might be missing when you go back to the entrance.
    ---

after the mosque, we headed for the Red Fort via rickshaw. mukesh bargained with the rickshaw drivers, then when they saw that their passengers were not locals, they got really upset for giving mukesh a local price. talk about discrimination... yikes.  ---  sidestreet shop
    ---

intricate marble inlay designs at Red Fort  ---  look at the stones in the marble! so impressive
from our touristy map:  "Red Fort - a colossal structure of red sandstone buil by Shah Jehan in 1638, and was the last seat of Mughal power till the last emperor was dethroned. Inside the Fort are majestic audience halls (which once housed the diamond-and-ruby studded Peacock Throne), the Pearl Mosque and marble palaces."
    ---

fifteen candles sat in this, and a waterfall would stream out over the top (see the slit between the platform and the top of the "fireplace"? SO NEAT. if i am ever so rich that i don't know what to do with the remainder of my money after donating to charities and investing, i am totally putting a waterfall structure like this in my house.  ---  more marble inlays. sad... you can see where the gemstone pieces were stolen.
    ---

it must have taken so much work and time to do all that!  ---  the colossal Red Fort
the entrance fees to the Red Fort read: Citizens of India - Rs. 5, Others - Rs. 100. ridiculous! even though it's only $2 usd for foreigners, what a blatant display of discrimintation. another reason why i really felt like a tourist in india.
    ---

after the Red Fort, we followed mukesh to a jalebi stand. YUMMERS.  ---  looook at that syrupy jalebi!!!
    ---

adriel unsure if he should give a treat to the begging dog at his feet
    ---

giving into the powerful eyes of the poi dog  ---  returning home on a rickshaw
    ---

we walked to the Khan Market that night to buy toiletries and other items that you can't find in China
and decided to auto-rickshaw it home!
    ---

waking up the next morning, still ill  ---  mukesh took us to the Mughal Gardens, the president's garden, that morning. entrance is fee, but the gardens are only open to the public a few weeks out of the year. i guess we got lucky :) the gardens were really beautiful. i wanted to touch the petals of a flower, and mukesh started yelling, "no no no!" he told me after that he thought i was going to pick the flower. come on, i'm from hawai'i, i have respect for all flora and fauna, i know better than to do that, esp. in a garden. why do people always think i'm some kind of american idiot who doesn't know how to respect other cultures?
anyway... then mukesh dropped us off at some asian food restaurant (i know, haha) which was actually pretty good! we wanted to see what asian food was like in india because mukesh told us that his favorite chinese dish was "chilli chicken" hahaha. obviously an authentic chinese dish. look at the spread!
    ---

after lunch, we headed to a market to look around at the different goods... didn't buy much but had some masala tea and ice cream ---  trudging on without the cane
    ---

a watch repairman at another, more local, market  ---  stopping at Devan's Coffee & Tea to buy gifts for friends and fam
    ---

AD and the OX  ---  spent our last night at a PVR cinema because there's no real local nightlife in india. watched ghostrider (horrible movie) but it was the only movie we could make, hehe. after the movie we walked around the area for a bit, buying magazines and other goods that china can't offer.
    ---

our last meal in india: McDonalds! hahaha.... i never eat McDonalds (except when in Hong Kong... HK McDs kicks ass) but we needed to try the McDs here because of the vegetarian options! look, a McVeggie burger!!!
    ---

panner (indian cottage cheese) salsa wrap! mccurry pan shahi paneer! a vegetarian fast food heaven.  ---  the only time you'll ever see me eating a mcdonalds burger
    ---

and then the trip ended with AD looking 7 as ever.

  • Mumbai in 31 snapshots

greetings from the chilly den known as my uninsulated living room. as i sip my masala tea (loving made by my servant AD) to try to ward away the last of the weird virus i had for the past week, i can't help but wish i was back in mumbai. maybe it's mumbai's warm inviting weather, the people (at least those we met), the delicious parsi fare, or the almost contradictory chaotic and carefree lifestyle of mumbai that's causing this longing to revisit mumbai, but it's probably the fact that we only had appro. 41 hours there, not even two full days. half the time i was jetlagged beyond belief, but we still managed to pack in a ton of mumbai, thanks to the gracious family that hosted us. :o )

    here we go!

    ---

day 1: after an uber-delayed plane ride with TWO stopovers (in bangkok and delhi,) we finally got to the mumbai airport. expecting to see a crowded busy airport, we were faced with a most empty international terminal. see picture 01. --- a tuk tuk and some palm trees alongside poverty made it feel like we were in some caribbean island for a while before we got into the heart of mumbai.
    ---
so we arrived in mumbai a good 4 hours late. the international
arrivals terminal was eerily empty. and this big dude from somewhere in
the EU tried to cut in front of AD in the money exchange line. adriel
spoke up before i did - funny how things change :) we met the person
who picked us up from the airport and observed the blatant poverty in
mumbai on the 45 min drive into the city.

during the drive, mumbai reminded me a lot of los angeles. few
tall buildings, lots of trucks with colorful painted signs on them
(lots of these in the ghetto mexican areas by USC) and bright skies
paired with palm trees. we arrived at our lodging and met navroze, who
gave us the tour of his home. we were lucky enough to be guests at a
local residence and WOW was that a nice house. i don't mean nice like,
"white marble grand staircase with gold trimmings blah blah" but nice
as in it was comfortable and nicely decorated with art. it almost felt
like we were staying in a museum. :o )
we got "freshened up" and then left to the yacht club
where we caught the ending of an award celebration. on the way there,
navroze gave us a short driven tour of mumbai which helped me get my bearings
the next day. at the yacht club, i felt like i was in a 1930s movie
    - the architecture and decor was really old school india british (don't
mind my words, i'm exhausted) and it made me wish that more places like
this existed in the US. maybe its because i've only been to bigger
cities, but it seems like everything's overly restored or renovated in
the US so that you can't even recognize it from what it was back when
    it was built.

during that function, us "kids" (which ranged from me to 31y/o) went to the taj
hotel to have dinner at a more-upscale indian restaurant in the
hotel lobby. talk about spoiling us for food - though i didn't much due to the 3+ meals i had earlier in the day on the flights, i did taste the tandoori paneer, some corn roasted in spices and herbs, naan, daal, some kind of rice dish, and two creamy indian ice creams. :o ) mmm.... adey fell in love with the fish that night, which was bad because all the fish he ate elsewhere didn't meet his newly formed high standard

    ---
    day 2

a shot from inside the amazing home in which we stayed --- sipping on tea and waiting for others to rise.
    ---

we met another house guest and friend of the family, anne, who was visiting from scotland and would give a short art history lecture at a museum that evening. she was much older than us, at the age where all her family and friends were passing away, and i could hear the sadness in her voice even though she kept an upbeat attitude about it. she works at the national gallery in scotland (? a big art museum) and was giving a lecture on a hobby of hers.
that morning, adriel asked the servants if he could watch them make masala tea. of course the language barrier didn't allow for much communication, so we just stood around and watched them work their masala magic boiling the tea, then the milk, chopping up ginger and lemongrass and whatever else, etc. we got up a bit earlier since we were still on SH time, and then after some tea and chatting with anne, we went downstairs for a breakfast of fruit, fresh squeezed juices, toast, eggs, and roasted toms for adey. at the breakfast table we met the woman who took us on our half-day tour around mumbai. and off we went in a white tourist car :o )

    ---

a pigeon on the balcony of the home --- can you spot the flesh-eating crow?
    ---

the crow is important because that morning we learned about the parsi (zoroastrian) sky burial that morning, which has a different reason from the tibetan sky burial. though the vulture is the main bird associated with sky burial, our guide told us that the crows also take part in the feasting. in tibet the ground is too hard and there is little fuel to burn corpses, so sky burial has been practiced for ages (it's thought to be before Buddhism, but whatever, i'm not an anthropologist ) in the zoroastrian religion, sky burial has more meaning. the body is left to decompose by the sun, the wind, and vultures and crows. cremation, ground burial, and drowning harms the elements fire, earth, and water, so the sky burial is the preferred method of "burial."

    ---

the gardens where we started our tour and where one of the sky burial towers of silence are located (i think)
    ---

our tour guide and adriel looking out over the bay --- hee hee do i look indian?
    ---
bombay is like manhattan in a sense - they're both big financial districts and they're both located on an island. the only difference is that there are HUGE differences between the two cities
    ---

Dhobi Ghat - this is exactly what it looks like. a big outdoor open-aired cheap ass laundromat.
    ---

here the men collect clothes from all over the city, soak it in those
pools of water you see above, whip the clothing on the stones to get
all the dirt out (seriously whipping, beating, i don't even know how to
describe it) and then hang it up to dry. i believe starching in
    involved somewhere in the process.
these families have been doing this for generations. this is how strong
the caste system is in india. our tour guide told us that the
"untouchables" will never take another job, even if it's a cushier
better paid one, because the caste system is so ingrained in the
culture there. wow. honestly, if i was born into a family that had to
wash clothes daily by hand like this, i think i'd take a food service
job in a second (a job i'd probably never want to do in my life, i hate
    being patient )

    ---

a closer look at the men slaving away at the laundry for pennies  ---  the city train, next to the dhobi ghat.
    ---
on some indian trains, the first few cars are designated specially for the women so that they don't have to be subjected to the groping and other molestation that happens when you're crammed into a train car with a bunch of seedy men. kind of like japan, but i read that even in the women's cars there is some tension sometimes. some women see the segregation as a bad thing, that it's slowing the gender-equality process in india, but others see that it's necessary to have segregation like this until women are seen more as equals. i agree with the latter~
    ---

i was so happy when i saw this, i had to snap a photo. once in the summer, adriel and i watched this show where they explained how lunches are packed in those silver tiered tiffins. it's really innovative, well, at least compared to western "lunch boxes." there are 3-5 containers stacked up, and each container holds something different, such as, dal (lentils,) curry, some rice, chutneys, bread (roti, naan, chappatti, etc.) then when the servants are done preparing the meals at home, another worker comes by to pick up the tiffin along with tiffins from other families and delivers it to the working men. the bags in the green crate on his head hold tiffins like the visible metal one. --- cows and ox line the streets
    ---

a busy market where our tour guide brought adriel and i. it seemed really local because we were the only tourists there - super awkward. i've never felt so touristy in my life! we purchased a typical indian spice bowl for a decent price. good times.
    ---

leisurely times on the streets of bombay  ---  i love the architecture in mumbai. this building is a train station. a TRAIN STATION. what?
    ---

more great architecture. another thing i love about mumbai are the cabs - they're so old school, but not as classic as the cabs in delhi
    ---

a view of a cricket field from the rooftop of an office building  ---  sporting the bindi to massage my "third eye" heehee
    ---

a most loving family in the rooftop garden after an engagement announcement lunch. bougainvillea. i thought i'd never see those flowers again  ---  opening of a modern art gallery in the busy center of mumbai. interesting to see the type of people who attended this opening... some foreigners, some locals, people dressed up, people dressed down.
    ---

after the lunch, which gave us the chance to taste delicious Parsi food <--seriously my new favorite cuisine... YUM!, we went home for a quick nap to catch up on the travel tiredness. then we got up and were whisked to a musuem to listen to anne's lecture on a british explorer who combined art with science in his early travels in india before the colony days. it was nice because museums are typically closed on mondays, but we got to at least see a small part of it. once the lecture was over, we stopped by the yacht club again for a quick potty break then headed over to an art gallery opening, as can be seen above. after about 30 mins there, we headed home to change clothes and then went to the wedding reception below. whew!!

    ---

our host family brought us to an indian wedding reception. as you can see from the pictures below, it was pretty grand. i wish i had taken pictures from the stands (it was located at a horse racetrack grounds.) we were wedding crashers, but apparently it doesn't matter since there were hundreds (a few thousand?) of people attending. all the women were dressed so colorfully and elegantly, and i wore black 'coz my host mother told me to. hm... adriel wore a kurta while the local men wore suits. at least he blended in, heehee.
    ---

the married couple has to stand on the stage and greet everyone who comes - ridiculous... can you imagine standing on a stage in the heat for hours just saying hello to everyone, most of whom you probably don't even know? the queue was crazy long too... maddness.  ---  the entire reception area seemed to be about 4 american football fields big. an enormous sea of color and sparkles
    ---

best part - a delicious buffet! there were dozens of food stalls serving all kinds of cuisines - different types of indian food, chinese, thai, western, etc. i couldn't believe it! of course we loaded our plates up on the indian, but my weak tongue couldn't handle the "mild" spice. i loved it though - they even had some "indian street food" snacks but made with safe water and ingredients. we shared some indian desserts (gulab jamun, jalebi, kulfi) and then washed it all down with local Kingfisher beer. we loved it, jetlagged and all.
    ---

so that was our bombay experience :o ) we had such a short time there but still were able to do so much! i'll put up the delhi pics ASAP but for now, hope you enjoyed what little of mumbai i could share with you!
